What is endometriosis?
It’s when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus where it shouldn’t. For example, on the ovaries or fallopian tubes. Despite being outside the uterus, this tissue still responds to monthly hormonal changes and can expand and contract, causing pain.
The primary symptom of endometriosis is intense period pain, but it can also cause heavy period bleeding, fatigue, pelvic pain not related to the period, and reduced fertility.
How can acupuncture help?
In a 2023 systematic review published in the journal Integrative Medicine Research, the authors combined data from 6 studies on endometriosis and acupuncture, for a total of 331 patients.
They found that acupuncture reduced both non-period-related pelvic pain and menstrual pain compared to the controls.

In clinical practice, I’ve also seen acupuncture reduce heavy period bleeding, improve fatigue, as well as many other improvements to overall quality of life.
