Why did I choose to become a Certified Professional Hypnotherapist?

Many of you might not know what my medical training in Eastern Medicine entailed. In 1999, I began at Pacific College of Health and Science in San Diego and jumped right into a 4-year program that included anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, internal medicine, obstetrics, gynecology, sports medicine, herbal medicine, nutrition, practice management, plus more. I also had 3000 hours of clinical supervision. Part of this program was to pass exams that mimicked the state licensing board exams. I had not yet been diagnosed with mild dyslexia, but I knew that exams were difficult for me, so it was very nerve-racking! There was one portion of the exam that I did not pass on the initial go-around. When I went to speak with the dean of students, she told me that folks in my situation had a more difficult time passing the state board the first time around. Well, I did NOT want that to be me!

A friend and mentor suggested a hypnotist. I have never had any experience, but I was willing to try anything at that time, so I signed up. My sessions with the woman were very professional, and I went a handful of times. And guess what? From then on, I passed every single portion of every exam I took for the next three years, plus my state licensing exam (which was known to be the most difficult in the country), the first time around in 2003.

I know firsthand the power of hypnotherapy. It can help us break through subconscious beliefs that do not serve us, without having to talk through old memories or bring up the past. If you are considering hypnosis, it is very helpful to be clear as to what you want to work on. Creating new neural-networks and patterns which will change how we are and who we are in the world is powerful stuff.

How Does Hypnosis Work?

Our subconscious mind is where habits, emotions, memories, and automatic responses live. While we often try to make changes using willpower alone, the subconscious holds the blueprint for many of our repeated patterns, whether supportive or self-sabotaging. Hypnosis helps bridge the gap between the conscious and subconscious, creating space for new beliefs, behaviors, and possibilities.

During a hypnosis session, you remain awake and aware but deeply relaxed. This relaxed state allows the conscious mind to quiet down, allowing the subconscious mind to receive empowering suggestions that align with your goals and values. The process is collaborative, respectful, and safe. You are always in control and cannot be made to do anything that goes against your beliefs or integrity.

Benefits of Hypnosis

Hypnosis can be used to address a wide range of issues, both physical and emotional. Some of the most common areas people seek hypnosis for include:

  • Stress and Anxiety Relief – Hypnosis promotes calm and focus, reducing physical tension and reprogramming stress responses.

  • Breaking Habits and Addictions – Whether it’s smoking, nail-biting, or emotional eating, hypnosis can target the subconscious drivers of compulsive behaviors.

  • Sleep Improvement – For those struggling with insomnia or restless nights, hypnosis helps retrain the brain to associate bedtime with deep rest and relaxation.

  • Confidence and Performance – Athletes, speakers, and creatives often use hypnosis to overcome mental blocks and perform at their best.

  • Healing Emotional Wounds – Hypnosis supports inner child work, self-forgiveness, and letting go of past trauma in a gentle, empowering way.

  • Weight Management – By shifting subconscious beliefs about food, body image, and self-worth, hypnosis can support a healthy relationship with eating and movement.

Whether you’re seeking clarity, confidence, or deeper healing, hypnosis offers a natural and effective way to create meaningful change from the inside out.
