International Women's Day: Celebrating Wellness and Prevention through Traditional Chinese Medicine

By Dr. Dalite Sancic, DACM, L.Ac.

As we celebrate International Women's Day, it's a perfect time to honor not just the women who inspire us but also the importance of self-care and holistic wellness. This year, we’re taking a moment to explore how Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offers profound insights into maintaining balance, health, and prevention—cornerstones for every woman to thrive in her unique journey.

Embracing Wellness with TCM

At its core, TCM is about maintaining harmony within the body and mind. It teaches that wellness stems from balance—between the body’s energies, between emotions, and between our personal and external worlds. It’s a practice that encourages us to listen to our bodies, nourish our spirits, and support ourselves through preventative measures that align with nature's rhythms.

The Five Elements and Women’s Health

In TCM, the Five Elements—Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water—reflect various aspects of our lives and bodies. Each woman has a unique elemental constitution, and understanding this can guide how to care for ourselves.

  • Wood (Liver): The Wood element governs the liver and is closely connected to emotions like anger and frustration. By supporting the liver with herbs like milk thistle or practicing Qi Gong, we can release pent-up emotions and maintain a clear path forward.

  • Fire (Heart): Fire relates to the heart, the center of joy and vitality. Taking time for activities that bring joy and calm—like meditation, tea ceremonies, or time spent with loved ones—nourishes our hearts and spirits.

  • Earth (Spleen): Earth governs digestion, grounding, and nourishment. Women often face digestive challenges during hormonal shifts, but nourishing foods like root vegetables, grains, and soups, alongside herbs like ginger and cinnamon, can support overall digestion and immunity.

  • Metal (Lung): The Metal element corresponds to the lungs and the immune system. With air pollution and seasonal changes, taking care of our lungs is vital. Breathing exercises, such as deep belly breathing or Tai Chi, can help strengthen lung function and immunity.

  • Water (Kidneys): Water governs the kidneys, which are associated with vitality and reproduction. In TCM, preserving Kidney energy is crucial for women, especially during periods of high stress or hormonal changes. Herbal tonics, adequate rest, and avoiding excessive salt or caffeine can help maintain Kidney health.

Preventative Wellness: Key Practices for Every Woman

In TCM, prevention is always better than cure. Here are some holistic practices that support long-term health:

  1. Seasonal Detoxing: Spring is a time for renewal and detoxification. Cleansing the liver through herbal teas (like dandelion root) and incorporating light, nutrient-dense foods can help reset your body after winter.

  2. Regular Acupuncture: Acupuncture not only alleviates pain but also helps to maintain energy flow (Qi) throughout the body. Regular treatments prevent illness, boost immunity, and keep your energy balanced.

  3. Mind-Body Harmony: Practices like Yoga, Pilates, Tai Chi and Qi Gong combine movement and breath to improve circulation, reduce stress, and support emotional well-being. These are invaluable tools in a woman’s wellness routine.

  4. Herbal Support: TCM herbs like ginseng, astragalus, and licorice root have been used for centuries to strengthen immunity, support energy levels, and balance the hormonal system.

  5. Diet as Medicine: TCM emphasizes the importance of food as medicine. Eating according to the seasons, favoring warm, nourishing meals, and focusing on balancing yin and yang foods can prevent illness and nourish the body. A varied diet with seasonal vegetables, grains, and proteins helps maintain harmony.

The Wisdom of Balance

As women, we often juggle many roles—caregiver, professional, friend, and more. The teachings of TCM remind us that balance is key to living well. By honoring our bodies through holistic practices, we can prevent disease, increase vitality, and live with a sense of peace and strength.

This International Women's Day, let us celebrate the power of prevention and the wisdom of holistic care. Let us commit to honoring ourselves with the same compassion and intention we give to others.

May this day and every day be filled with wellness, balance, and vibrant health. We are here to support you in your health journey so please reach out if you are in need of clarity in a do-able wellness plan.
